CRICKET.
TIIE REPRESENTATIVE .\LATCH. Followers of cricket are catered for by the representative match between North and South Taranaki, wliith is to he played on the Recreation Grounds on Easter Monday and the day following Tins match is sure to attract a good attendance. as cricket patrons pjin remember the historic match that occurred on the previous meeting of these team* in Xew Plymouth, on January 1 and 2, 1912. That match was easily won bv Xorth Taranaki by an innings and 18(i runs. South Taranaki scored 1.81 and 21, whilst Xorth Taranaki scored 388. Of those who took part in that match JJunlop, Cole and Penny alone represent South Taranaki this year. The firstnamed. it will he remembered, scored 87 in tile first innings and 14 in the second, and also took five wickets for 11!), thus doing the lion's share of the work. The southern team is said to be a strong one. notable absentees being McCarthy, Pratt. Judd and Slinger. The bowline department will be in the hands of Hill (ex-Law player), Dunlop, Onglev and Colnian. Representative footballers are well represented, there being no fewer than three, viz., Ongley (Xorth Otagoand West Coast), Hill and Colman (Taranaki). Of the Xorth Taranaki team Bain, Matthews. Osborne, Perham and Arden are playing on Monday, and Bluudell ( who-e average was eight Tor 111 ) is an emergency. The match under review Will long be remembered for Matthews' meteoric hitting. In 40 minutes lie scored 73. including eight sixes, live of these terrace bits coming in one over ofi" Roves. Gwillim, who is not playing in this match, played a splendid innings for 144 not out. He, too, hit eight sixes and ten fours. Weston, Gudgeon, Dinniss and Ingram, who completed the team, have been omitted for various reasons. and Lash. Clegg, Grea thatch. Mason, Colvile and Sommerville have been included. On the whole the team is a strong one. and should, but for the uncertainties of cricket, repeat the performance of 15 months ago and also of three months ago, for Xorth Taranaki also defeated South Taranaki at Hnwera last Xew Year time by 112 runs. Only three of the South Tarnnaki and five of the Xorth Taranaki players who participated in that match are playing on Monday..
The Prince of Wales, who recently scored the only goal on his side when plaving for Magdalen against another college, is. apparently, more of an expert at football than his grandfather was at cricket. T» one of George Meredith's letters, written some fifty years ago. the following passage occurs: "When the Prince of Wales was in Ireland he came to the Vice-regal Lodge and plaved cricket. C warned all the opposition bowlers that royal patronage of the manly game depended 011 the Prince getting at least one run. having missed, whilst fielding, two fine smack-inthe-hand catches. Wales goes 011 and faces an unnamed, steady, determined Briton of a bowler, round, ruddy— i'.n inevitable creature: one clearly selected hv the gods to do this black business with the utmost satisfaction and comfort. Down went the wicket of vonr Prince at the first delivery of the hall!"
