RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
ONE KILLED; THREE SERIOUSLY INJURED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dnnedin, Thursday. A fatal accident occurred at a railwaj crossing at Mosgiel at ten minutes to six this evening. Robert Adair, an employee at the Hillside Workshops, was driving over the crossing in a trap, which also contained his three children, and was struck bv a train. Adair was killed outright., and the three children were seriously injured. Dunedin, Last Night. At the inquest 011 Robert Adair, who was killed at Mosgiel yesterday, the evidence showed that deceased was driving a horse and trap from Dnnedin to Mosgiel, and when crossing the Gordon road at 5.50 p.m. the train ran into the trap, cutting it to pieces and throwing the. occupants out, deceased receiving such, injuries that he died soon afterwards. Three girls, named Trevethan, aged nine, seven and four years respectively, also received serious injuries, and were conveyed ,to the Dunedin Hospital. The evidence went, to show that the train, which was travelling at the rate of from twenty to twentv-ftve miles per hour, whistled before reaching the spot, as usual. The trap was travelling at a fast pace, and the driver, who was looking in the opposite direction, on seeing the train, pulled lip, but being then on the line it was too late to get clear. One of the girls is still unconscious. Adair was about thirty-five years of age, and was married about a vear ago. He leaves a widow, and one child. A verdict was returned that death was due to injuries received bv being run over bv a railway train, 110 blame being attachable to'the driver of the train.
