ATHLETICS.

LEPPEPTOX-SEXTRY HILL PICNIC AXD S J'OPTS. The annual Lepperton-Scntry Hill picnic and sports, which are to be held on the Waitara racecourse (opposite the Lepperton railway station) on Thursday, the 27th inst., promise to be even a greater success this year than in former years. The different committees have been hard at Avork for-some time past, '■ilid are determined to_lea.A'e no stone unturned iii making arrangements complete in every detail. In former years the receiving of entries and the handicapping for the different events have all been done on the day of the sports, but this year, however, the committee very wisely have decided to close the entries for >the handicap events a week before the picnic. The programme is a long and varied one, and includes 100 yds, 220 yds. 440 yds and BSoyds open handicaps, horse-leaping, one mile and two mile cycle races, rescue race, catching greasy pig. etc., and no doubt record entries will he received. The first event is timed to start at Full particulars can be obtained from W. E. Sampson, the secretary, Sentry Hill. The entries close to-morrow. HILLSBOITOUGH SPORTS. The Sports Committee met on Mon-j day night and made final arrangements j iu connection with to-morrow's gather-1 ing. In addition to cash prizes for the numerous events on the programme trophies will also be given. Mr. Sampson's ground is an ideal spot for spending a pleasant day, being surrounded by beautiful native bush. It is needless to say that,all roads lead to Egniont Road, and it is hoped that all roads for miles around will be represented. In the evening a first-class concert will be held in the hall, and some excellent talent has been engaged from New Plymouth and surrotmding districts, and of course any function in the country would hardly be complete without the inevitable dance, so that those that enjoy the light fantastic will be able to do so on a really excellent lloor and to the strains of first-class music.
