A drag, containing twenty-two picnio.k- . firs, had a miraculous escape at a level t crossing on the Brighton railway on ; Saturday night. The drag was on the metals when the train was approaching I the gates, which, being half open, prevented the driver of the drag from manoeuvring his horses straight across. He hurriedly decided to attempt to escape hy driving tin; team along the line towards Brighton. The horses responded I well, and moved in the direction of safety, and before the passengers realised their danger, the drag was almost clear of the line, when the train dashed up and struck the rear corner, knocking off the rear hind wheel and tearing out the side, leaving the passengers still sitting on the seat alongside. James Neil Allison jumped off the drag in the wrong direction, and was killed instantly. The passengers on the train alighted, and swarmed over the line searching for pos- , sible victims. > The train from Brighton came along, and another disaster seemed imminent, but fortunately the driver took warning from'the lights carried by searchers and pulled up the train just clear of the damaged drag.
