CRIME IN AUCKLAND.
UNEXPLAINED ATTACKS. !!y Tolcgraph—rress Association. Auckland, Saturday. A man named William James Webb was returning home to firey Lynn at 11.30 o'clock" last night when he was assaulted by two men, one of whom he allege* attempted to stab him, but was prevented by a passer-by, who wrenched the knife ' away. Constable Smith rescued Webb after a struggle with his assailants, who escaped. Webb was roughly handled and considerably bruised, Leo de Earnest, driver of a taxi-cab, was found on a road in the suburbs with severe cuts on the head and face, and was removed to the hospital. He states that lie drove two young men out of town. Tie remembers driving the car to the street in which he was found, but nothing more until he found the lamplighter bending over him. He had been unconscious for over au hour. The empty car was found on the roadside. ' TV, contained two broken bottles, and ' was stained with blood.
