WATER CARNIVAL.

AT WAITARA. '[ Tlii' Waitara Water Carnival, as the result oi" the eJVorts of a number of enthusiasts, was revived this year, ami after its period of temporary demise attracted a very fair attendance at Waitara yesterday. .Many of the events tilled ' but poorly, and the native races, whilst spiritedly ami warmly contested, were lacking in char-1 after," and appeared to lie regarded! rather as jest than sober earnest. The rowing events only drew small lipids,. and the remaining' items were similarly [poorly patronised. Nevertheless, tl'ie j bright weather formed a fitting excuse I for many .people to picnic on the hills land 011 the river, and the various tugs | and launches plying to the mouth of the river were well patronised. The officials all worked hard to ensure the 1 success of the gathering, and the cncrI getic secretary. Air. 11. Spurdle, was particularly emphatic in his efforts to keep | the ball rolling, and the events up to | time. Several items on the programme i had to be abandoned owing to the 'paucity of entries. The following are the resujts of the various competitions:—

Alaiden AVhaleboat Race, first prize £3, second £1; one mile and a half.— Clifton Rowing Club (N. Kyle stroke, 0. Taylor, J. Mann, L. Old. Al. \Aickham). 1; Waitara Rowing Club (L. Andrews stroke, J. Tolfar, C. Limmer. AL l'reston, 13. Grimmer), 2; Waitara Rowing' Club. No. 2 (-J. Bailey stroke, .T.Kingi, Kire, E. Frost and Wi), 3. Won' by a length and - half.

Alaiden Sculls, of £3. second £l. _threequarters of a mile.—Al. Cain (Clifton) walk over.

Boys' Whaleboat Race (under 18 Years), first prize £3, second £1; one mile.—Clifton Rowing C'lnl) (F. Procter stroke. S. Chattield. L. Feok, J. McDoi)ald, CI. McKoy), 1; Waitara Rowing Club No. 2 (.J. Bailey stroke, E. Frost. Kire, W. Klenner. R. Pennington). 2. Waitara Rowing Club No. 1 also started.

Senior Whaleboat Race, first prize £O, second £1; one mile and a half. —Clifton Rowing Club No. 1 (1'- Jones stroke, M. Cain, I!. Bernsten. F. Clare. F. Richards), 1; Waitara Rowing Club (W. Terrill stroke, 11. George. 11. Hicks. Tie, E. Andrews), 2. The only starters. Won very easily. Time, llniin ;V>see. Maori Waka Race, first prize £O. second £2 10s; about one mile. Hereawa (leader Tuohu), 1; Titilii (leader Kstpinga), 2. Won comfortably after a good race.

Senior Clinker Fours, first prize £fi, second prize £1; three-quarters of a mile.—Clifton Rowing Club (F. Richards stroke, J. Cain, M. Cain. A. Bowen). walk over.

Senior Tub Race, first prize 10s, second prize os. —C'lare 1, Klenner 2. Five started, and Clare won easily.

Youths' .Clinker Fours, first prize £3. second prize £1; about three-quarters of a mile. —Clifton Rowing (Hub No. 1 (W. Spurdle stroke, P. Feek, L. Feck, R. Lawrence), 1; Clifton Rowing Club No. 2 (J. Roach stroke, .T. .lones. 0. McKoy. E. Brown). 2; Waitara Rowing Club No. 1 (E. L. Clare stroke. F. (I. McDavitt. E. Johnson. F. L. Smaill). .'!. Waitara Rowing Club No. 2 (A. F. Procter stroke) also started. The winning team were practically in front the whole way, winning pulling up, by three lengths, with the number two crew half a length alsead o? Waitura.

Maori War Canoe Race, first prize £l2 and gold medal for leader; second prize £4; about one mile. Titilii (leader Kaponga), 1; Hereawa (leader Tuohu), 2. The only starters. Hereawa led for half a mile, but Titilii being quicker on the turn drew away and ultimately won comfortably.

Greasy Boom, first prize 10s. —L. Andrews 1. There were only three other competitors. Diving Competition, first prize 10s or trophy.—J. Olsen- 1. Three others competod. Maori Canoe Hurdle Race, first prize £4, second £1 10s; about half a. mile.— Karepouia 1, Karewao 2. The only starters. Karewao looked all over winner half way, but a bad swamp at the last hurdle ruined their chance, and Karepouia paddled in an easy first. Swimming Race Handicap (for youths under IS), first prize 10s or trophy); about 101) yards. —D. Tate (ssco) 1. P. Klenner (scr) 2, V. Pennington ("see) 3.

Schoolboys' Swimming Race Handicap, first prize 7s Oil, second prize 2s 0(1; about 70 yards. —Maekie 1, Bernsten 2. MeKenzie 3.

The Dinghy Tug-of-War, Barrel Race and Plate Diving were abandoned owing to insufficient entries.
