AY ARE A. (From Our Own Correspondent.) I understand the local .Sunday School children's picnic will lit held on the beach on Kastor Monday. The local hall has nov,' another improvement which will he a great benefit to the ladies who superintend the washing np of the dishes. Some time ago a sink was procured, and it was set in the other day by Messrs. Penwanlen and Hart free of charge. The Horticultural Society's Show which was held last week proved to he a very successful one. perhaps the best the Society has hail. /11 some sections there were not quile as many entries us in other years, but the quality was superior, especially in the vegetables. A short time ago whenever we travelled we met a few ''cockies" standing together, niul their conversation was the coast railway from Aloturoa to Opunake, "Now we hear nothing of the railway.. The thieves came vmss the neighbor's paddock with a v nil's eye lamp, and one stoppin«- -t r,.e f':i;ce, shone the lamp on the orchard while the other one got. the fruit, but fortunately for Airs. Larking the thieves were seen coming, and were disturbed before anything was taken. About a fortnight, ago Air. Parker's orchard—the largest about here—was entered with a cart, and every apple and pear worth eatim; was taken, including some -how exhibits, which had been gathered and left in a bag under a tree. The same night the Alaoris at Pnuiho !o-f some live hags of potatoes and some onions which they are sure came to AYarea.
