THE TRADE COMMISSIONERS.
Tiic; Imperial Trade spent: an enjoyable day yeslerdav, They li<uL a spin into the eoumry per the time-and-distance-annihiliating machine, the motor-ear. and then were taken up to the Mecca of our visitor.-;, the .Mountain House. The scenery en route captivated 1 the visitors, particularly Sir Rider Haggard, who was loth to leave it, and who had much to say in its praise in the little speechifying at the luncheon. Sir Rider Haggard is an apostle of bush and scenery preservation., and has missed 110 opportunity during his brief sojourn in these islands to impress 011 the people the importance of the subject and the duty they owe to posterity concerning it. Naturally, lie was pleased that efforts in this direction locally liad been responsible for the preservation of the Egmont 'National Park, and oilier scenic spots, and he voiced his pleasure in the words:—"l- feel towards those men a sense almost of veneration." The visit has given the Commissioners an insight into the rural, scenic, and industrial life of the province, and on this account should be productive of some good.
