PLAY THE CAME. DOCTOR!

To the' Editor. Sir.—From a paragraph in your paper I note that Dr. Newman. M.P., representin" a Wellington seat, is (or was) a visitor to New Plymouth Mountain House. Hoping that the jovial medico is still in the district. I desire, per medium of your journal, to pass along a word or two to him. In the early part of last session of Parliament Dr. Newman charged the Hon. R. MeNab with receiving £2OO from the Government in payment of the work lie had done in connection willi the preparation and pub-. lication of his hook dealing with the early history of Xew Zealand. Of course the worthy doctor made the charge on the floor'of the House and nnoV Parliamentary .privilege. The charge was immediately repudiated, and it was clearly proved that Mr. MeXab had never received, a penny piece from the State or any other source to reimburse him for the time, labor and money he had expended to obtain the necessary material for writing and publishing his book. Mr. McXab naturally resented the doctor's baseless statements. Now. Sir, the point T wish to hit Dr. 'Newman with is this: Many months ;luivr! pa.-M-d away since he was proved 'to have slandered Mr. MeXab.- and. as far as I have been able to ascertain, be (Dr. Newman) has not admitted his error and apologised. T would like to ask Dr. Newman if he Ihinks lie has played the game. Although only casually acquainted with him I have always looked upon the doctor as an honorable man and a particular! v good'sport. 1 would ask him to roll 'out of the ''party gutter" and admit bis error and apologise to the gentleman whom lie slandered. Sir. 'if the genial doctor has left the district T shall be glad if you will post him a marked copy of the issue in which you publish this leiler. Admittedly, it is a long time since the charge was made, but it is never too late to phiv the game.—T am, 0t( ... W, H. HAWKINS. Tut.iraimaka. March f>.
