BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held lust night, when there were present: The Mayor (Mr. G. W. Browne) and Crs. J. C. Morey, J. T. Mannix, J. E. Wilson. Jas. Clarke, 11. Stocker, W. Amburv, J. Buttimore, Hartliell, F. Jackson, J. Kibby and T. L. Buxton. COST OF METALLING. The engineer reported that with the new plant the metal for repairing now being laid down in Devon street, was 3s 4fV4d per yard, including royalty. With the old plant this would cost 6s fld per yard. The cost was made up as follows: ITawling boulders from rivers with borough team Is, hauling with traction and trailers crushing with motor (including electric- power) 4%d, spreading metal 4(1, breaking up old metal and rolling new iOd, and royalty fid. The hire of a traction engine at 20s per day, which with two trailers hauled 00 yards, at a cost of 10y 2 d per yard, with horse teams, would have cost 2s Cd. REPORTS. The reports as published yesterday were adopted, subject to the deletion , from the Works Committee's report of the clause recommending the borough engineer to lay down a piece of concrete road as a test. FORESHORE IMPROVEMENTS. Mr: G. E. Blanchard, secretary of the Foreshore Improvement Committee, wrote asking the Council to connect the band rotunda with the electric light, if possible, before Easter, and also to connect the copper with the water supply from a stand pipe close by. The engineer estimated the cost of the water connection at £4, and of the electric light at £s2.—Tt was resolved to make the water connection, and the Mayor, and Crs. Mannix, Wilson, Clarke and ,Stocker were appointed a committee to go into the matter, with power to act. ! GENERAL, j The borough solicitor was instructed to defend the action brought by the { Dartmoor Estate Company against the District Land Registrar, and the Council will indemnify the Registrar against anv costs in the matter. It was decided not to appoint assessors in connection with the new valuation It was resolved that, subject to the consent of the Harbor Board being obtained to the arrangement suggested by the engineer, i.e.. arranging for a mail to switch the light on and o(T daily; a street light will be erected at the foot of the breakwater. Mr. H. W. Climie is to be asked when the specifications will be ready for completing the work at the forebay, including the screens, handrails, etc. The borough engineer was instructed to obtain prices for installing the electric light in the cemetery cottage and the carter's cottage, and he was also authorised to accept tenders for the 1 works.
