A STEAMER WRECKED.
ALL HANDS SAFE. By Telegraph.—Per Press Association. Wellington, Saturday. The steamer Red Pine, built in Sydney last year for the West Coast timber trade, was wrecked at Stephen Island during a dense fog. All hands were saved. The vessel was of 364 tons, and was owned by a Greyniouth firm. Later advices relative to the wreck of the steamer Red Pine show that she was wrecked at 11 o'clock last night. She was laden with 1,340,000 feet of timber and 40 tons of coal for Wellington,shipped at Greymouth. A telegram received by the Marine Department saye that the vessel struck a rock off D'Urville Island, not Stephen's Island, as firsi reported. The captain and crew have arrived at the French Pass, and will come on t<» Wellington by the Awarua to-night. The Red Pine was of 364 tons gross, and 185 net. and was built of wood for the Pine Steamship Company, Crey/mouth. She was insured in Sydney iir the British Dominions' office, and partly reinsured with the Queensland Company. STEAMER -SINKS SUDDENLY. CREW LOSE HEAVILY. Nelson, Last Niglit. The Araluira brought to Nelson yesterday news of the steamer Red Pine, - which was wrecked on Capo Stephens on Friday night, two miles from the scene of the wreck of the Jane Douglas a couple of years ago. Captain Eden, states that, ho ran into a fog, but could* + see bush fires on D'Urville Island, and 1 set a course which he thought would: take the vessel safely past. Suddenly,' however, she struck a rock and sank so quickly that the crew had barely tinie\.j to get awav as they stood. Only one boat could be launched,' and it stood by til! daylight and then made for shore, where the castaways were hospitably treated by the settlers. The crew had been paid on the previous day.
