SHIPPING SHELTERING. STREETS FLOODED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. 1 Received 9, 5.5 p.m. i Sydney, March 9. i ' There was a strong gale with torren- ■ tial rain-in the city yesterday evening. The streets were Hooded, and considerable damage was done. Sailing boats in the harbor bad a rough time. A member of a yacht's crew was swept overboard and drowned. All races and sports meetings were postponed on account of the rain. Heavy weather and a rough sea continue, and in conseciuence all shipping is sheltering.
[ TORRENTIAL RAINS AND FLOODS. TWO FATALITIES. Received 10. 12.55 a.m. Sydney, March 9. The rain has cleared, but the weather on the coast is still rough. Saturday night's storm was the heaviest experienced for a, long time. There was thunder and torrential rain for several hours over a wide area. All the low-lying suburbs and the road to Mar : riekville district were deeply flooded. Many people were compelled to leave their houses and seek refuge in the Town Hall and elsewhere. The tram service was stopped. A cab was overturned by the flood waters at Leichardt. The driver was drowned, but the passenger escaped.' Telegraphic communication has been badly interrupted, including the line to La Perouse, necessitating sending Press Association cables by messenger.
