PROLONGED DROUGHT.
SKtiiors position in Tin-: south. OUTBREAK OK IMSKASK AMONG MAORIS. Auckland. March (>. 'Prolonged dry weather has been experienced iii the far north of Auckland this slimmer, and in some parts it is reported that no rain has fallen since October. Much inconvenience and distress has resulted, for water supplies have become very short at various times. Cases of disease among the Maoris have been reported, but have fortunately not proved to be serious outbreaks. Within the past few davs. however, news has been sent to the district Health UlVicer that typhoid fever has broken out among the Maoris at Oliaeawai settlement, about a dozen miles inland from the liay of Islands. Steps \Vcre taken to have the natives looked after, and a lield hospital' with a nur.se jr. charge lias been established. In consequence of the prolonged dry weather stock in the north is suH'ering scvcu'ly. as the grass is nearly all completely driid ii]> and alTords little feed. Large areas have been burnt, during the season ami fern and gra-s alike have be'jn cleared ofi.
