LOAN & MERCANTILE'S REPORT., The New Zealand- Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd.,,have received the following cablegram from their London house under date 4th inst:— There was a full attendance at the opening .of the sales to-day, competition by Home and Continental buyers being spirited, and prices, as compared with the close of the preceding series, ruled about 5 per cent, higher for merino and fine and medium crossbred wools, and about sto Ixf>1 x f> per cent, higher for coarse; crossbred. At Douglas on Friday. February 28, 1 held my supplementary sheep fair and cattle sale. There was a very good entry, sheep being yarded much in excess of advertised numbers. Competition throughout was brisk, most lines being cleared at the hammer. The demand for Lincoln rams was unsatisfied. At Waiwakaiho yards on Monday, 3rd inst... for an off-day I had a very pood entry. A choice line of Jersey springing heifers, on account of Mr. William Peattie, of Hell Block, sold at from £8 15s to .I'll. ss, averaging £!) 15s. Competition for other .lines was slack, vendors' reserves in many cases being too high, consequently many pens were passed. Sales were made at the following, rates:—Good weaner steers 33s to 36s 6d, Jerseys 8s Od to lfls, colored weaner heifers up to £2 13s, grades np to 37s (id, weeds from 13s to 18s Gd, empty 18months heifers* £2 17s Gd to £3 3s. 15months sterrs £2 105, store cows £2 Gs to £3 10s, forward and fat cows £4 12s Gd to £0 2s. bulls £3 7s Gd to £G 13s, springing heifers £5 5s. o For my Stratford sale "on Tuesday there was a very good yarding, most pens being filled. Matthews. Bennett and Co. report that there was a big yarding of cattle in their Inglewood yards on Wednesday last. Bidding was good and most lines found buyers at the hammer at the following prices: —Mixed weaners £1 2s to £llss, a nice line of colored weaner heifers £3 17s 6d, in-calf Jersey heifers (small) £5 2s fid, store cows £2 lis to £3 ss. forward do. £4 to £4 lis. fat cows £4 15s to £5 17s Gd, springing heifers £5 15s, springing cows £4 7s Gd to £5 15s, bulls (small) £1 10s to £4 Gs, good up to £0 ss, store lambs 6s lid, rape lambs os, Is.m. ewes (good) 10s, store wethers 14s 4d, small 2-tooth mixed 0s lid.
At the horse fair on Friday last there was a good entry of horses, but mostly of a poor class. Anything good was in demand and sold well. The following prices were obtained: —Weeds £1 10s to £2 10s, hack's *5 to £l2. light harness horses £8 to £ls, good spring carthorses up to £2l 10s, unbroken from £3 10s to £l2.
