SKIM MILK.

To the Editor. Sir,—The suppliers to factories have been considering for some lime past that with the manufacture of casein it is estimated the skim milk would realise equal to per lit for butter-fat. T am very much afraid farmers are going to grasp the shadow to lose the substance. The I >4(l is only approximate. There is no guarantee. If any factory is going to make casein it means no fat pigs, and tliev are now a good price and are likely to be. It farmers have been advised that they are going to rear calves un whey they are very much mistaken. They may see a poor, starved object in the paddock that they would be well ashamed to look at. If you doubt the statement, rear a good healthy calf. I low (locs any farmer expect to have good healthy cows to replace his herd if lie has to buy calf food (that, means extra cost)? These patent foods ale not what, they are cracked lip to be. I. feed all my calves on new milk for the liist month, then on skim-milk and calf food, anil a good bite of gnus. I can only then rear anything like a decent healthy calf. Some farmers are dragging everything out of the land and putting nothing back in the way of healthy stock. Then there are the extra outlay, interest, fuel and extra labor, with the loss of calves and pigs, to consider. Tam quite sure it will be better for farmers to retain their slcini milk. The benefits so derived indirectly will more than compensate them. The cheese market is not likely to lie too nourishing, whilst, the butter has every probability of being good for some time to come. 1 say. stock to good calves and get healthy cows and good fat pigs. Sam sure farmers will indirectlv be better oil'. — I am. etc., f!. V. TATE. Waitara We-t. March :!.
