Mr. L. 1-Tarcourt cabled to Mr. Barron that in order to avoid undue delay the New Zealand would visit only one port en route from South Africa, the rtill being made for coaling only, and not being a ceremonial one. Melbourne. February 28. A fire broke out at Emerson Bros.' furniture factory, which was destroyed. The damage amounted to £7OOO. 'and was covered by insurance. PANAMA CANAL POSSIBILITIES. Sydney, February 28. Mr. Nielsen, reporting on the ' effects of the opening of the Panama Canal on the Pacific coast coal trade, says that it will be impossible for Australian coal to compete with American coal. So far as San Francisco is concerned, we may conclude that the trade has gone, and he also thinks that tbe same applies to the Hawaiian trade. A UNIQUE SUGGESTION. Melbourne. February 28. The Trades Hal! Council agreed to the suggestion tliat a cinematograph film should be taken of the unemployed, and forwarded to England, to assist in stemming immigration.
