WANG AN I'l AUTUMN MEETING.
(By "Moturoa.")
The Wanganui Jockey Club's autumn meeting opens to-day. Beautifully fine weather set in on Tuesday, and continued over Wednesday. The glass is high, and everything augurs well for a record meeting. The course is now in capital order, and the going is excellent. Wanganui on Wednesday bore a very busy appearance, and the crowd of visitors appears to exceed that of recent years. The Cup is. of course, the principal tciic, and while most people favor the chances of Bronze, there are many who are heard chanting the praises of Masterpiece, Domino. Cheddar, Labor Day and others. The big mile and threequarter race promises to be a fine, eontest. Opinions differ as to whether Bronze is really the mare that she was when she scored easily last year, but she galloped nicely on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, and appears to be a regular ball of muscle. Weight of money has dragged her down in the quotations, and money talks! Domino's track show here (Wanganui) has been, of the best, and the Aucklander must run very well. Cheddar has not pleased so well, but comes as a confident "tip from Hawke's Bay. Labor Day is not so much fancied in the same quarter, but Mr. Lowry's recent purchase strikes one as being a more reliable proposition. Mira. after racing at Dunedin on Saturday, was 1 bustled north, and arrived here on Tuesday night. The grey is looking little the worse for the unprofitable trip, and is said to thrive, on travelling. The distance may trouble him, however, and he won't have Arthur Olliver on him to-day. Riders make a heap of difference to some horses. Deeley is without a mount in the Cup. and it is reported that he may he secured for Mira. Of the light-weights Lady Menschikoff and Tiresome are most discussed, and the fact that the former will have the craew light-weight joekster, R. Berry, in the j saddle enhances her prospects considerl ably. La'st year the Hawera mare ran fifth with 7.!) up. With a stone less, and in an admittedly weaker field, she should improve on that position. Tiresome may not get the distance, and the same doubt surrounds Master Laddo. On track form. Bronze and Domino look the fittest of the crowd, and Lady Menschikoff may keen them busy. Following are the probable starters and their riders in the Wanganui Chip: Labor Day (F. D. Jones) 8.7, Mira (B. Deeley) 8.5, Bronze (A. Olliver) 8.4 r Masterpiece (C. Emmerson) 8.2, Domino (L. Wilson) 8.2, Cheddar (H. Tricklebank) 7.2, Master Laddo (,T. O'Shea) 0.13, Lady Menschikoff (R, Berry) 6.!>, Tiresome (W. Bell) 6.8, Moutoa Girl (K. Lambess) 0.7, Composed 6.7. Masterpiece has been purposely left out of Imy calculations. His admirers may rest assured that he is looking very well and lis going strongly. He may be first or jhe may be last. He is a rogue, that is certain, and rogues can run against me.
A fine field will sport silk in the Flyj ing Handicap, six furlongs, Gladiolfl, S' Culprit. Ventura, Potoa. Crown Pearl and Antumnus just about represent the pink of the Dominion's sprinters, and 1 I their meeting has aroused immense inj terest. Gladiole. Ventura, Potoa, Crown 1 Pearl, Autumnus. Styx and Phroso galj loped strongly on Tuesday end Wednesday mornings, and the ones that pleased most were Ventura, Crown Pearl and Autumnus. Ventura has been brilliant, and Mr. ft. -T. Watt's representative must he given a great chance. Crown Pearl will have Olliver in the saddle, and the Xew Plymouth horse looks better than this scribe ever saw him before. Autumnus ran , over six furlongs on j Tuesday morning, and probably could have done better than 1.1!). The gallop j was rather disappointing. A lightweight that is being heavily backed is Ineuru. The brown daughter of Maniapoto generally runs well at 'Wanganui, but the company this time may be a bit above her. On track form Ventura, Crown Pearl and Autumnus look to he very dangerous.
Good reports come from Fordell of the doings of Postillion, and. this horse should mil prominently at the meeting. The same stable shelters the speedy Princess Moutoa. On Awapuni form she should show up well in the Juvenile Handicap, in which she is opposed to two warm members in Jason and Peronilla. Monologue was brought up yesterday, and looks very well. Th e Awapunitrained horse has been showing good form lately, and should run prominently this week. Sleacomhe has most friends in the yvy.,.i.. )( | al!c ] Serenity in the hack event. Wanganui, Last Night. There was fine weather and a big attendance for the final gallops this morning. The most interesting go was bel!iw . i% :■ nil Labor D;:y, they finishing in that order over a mile and a quarter in 2min. 15sec. Auturanus ran four furlongs in 50sec. Ventura, going easily, took Isec. longer. Styx beat Stepney in 52sec:, Dearest ran five furlongs in Iniin. 4see. Gladioli! easily beiit Makara in lsec. less. Moutoa Girl finished ahead of Crown Pearl at the end of six furlongs, run in lmin. 16sec. Crown Pearl was not pushed at the finish. Both galloped freely. Domino, looking well, did easy work. Eocene strode comfortably over four furlongs in 51 3-ssec. Postillion was not rushed in a mile gallop. Knutsford left six furlongs behind in lmin. 19sec. Red Lupin hopped over four furlongs in 52 sec. Sandy Paul moved well over six furlongs in lmin. ISsec. Masterpiece did casv work, finishing strongly over four furlongs. White Crane cantered. Big crowds arrived by the evening trains, and the attendance promises to be very large. The weather appears to be settled. The Hawera contingent of horses arrived this afternoon.
