The steamer Star of .Ireland, which arrived from New York last night, encountered a tierce storm on Christmas Eve. Huge seas swept across the vessel, and the lifeboats on the weather side were stove in. The vessel was hoveto for some hours.

The Rev. A. (Irani, hou. secretary of the committee which is endeavouring to raise funds for the founding of a girls' college at Haveloek North under the auspices of the Presbyterian Church, has addressed a'circular letter to all Presbyterian ministers appealing for support of the proposal. Between £2OOO and £IIOOO has already been secured, but unless another £2oot) is immediately forthcoming the success of the proposal is endangered. Miss Eraser, principalelect, who offers her services gratis, must be informed in March whether the building will be proceeded with for opening in February next year, otherwise she will withdraw the offer of her services, while the site for the college was given by Mr. 11. M. Campbell. M.P.. on condition that the college was built within a year.
COUNTTLLORS AT LOGGERHEADS. Wellington. Friday. The proceedings of the City Council terminated very abruptly last evening. The Mayor ruled an amendment proposed by Councillor Frost out of order. After a healed discussion, during which Councillor Fitzgerald said the .Mayor's ruling was a positive disgrace, Councillor Frost moved the adjournment of the Council. This was carried by 0 to 4. The Mayor informed an interviewer that the vote was unlikely to affect his course in future. 'T never have had the confidence of the majority of the Council because, speaking from a municipal standpoint, tliev are opposed to me politically."

Mayson, of Auckland, statins that a judicial declaration some few years ago was to the effect that if a certain Richard John Walters could be found the. estate would unquestionably revert to the writer. When his relative. Richard Walters, was in Mayson's employment, he is said to have known before his death that he was entiled to claim valuable lands in England, but felt too old to bother about money matters.
