CLOSER SETTLEMENT. By Telegraph —Press Association. Wellington, Thursday. An area of 10.320 acres of theShernden estate. Hawkc's Bay, will be opened next week for selection. Applicants must appear personally before the Land Board at Napier on February 25. ALLEGED PERJURY. Pahiatua, Thursday. Three young men, James Farrell, Walter Hirst and George Gregory, farmers of Konini, were charged yesterday before the Magistrate. Mr. Poynton. with committing perjury in the local court on January 28. The charge arose out of a case in which Farrell was fined by Mr. Reid. S.M., for assaulting a Chinaman named Wong .Tack. Hirst and Gregory were witnesses on that occasion for the defence. Both Farrell and Hirst swore they were neve)' in the Chinaman's shop and that Farrell never assaulted the Chinaman. The charge against Gregory was dismissed. Farrell and Hirst pleaded not guilty, and were committed for trial at the Masterton sessions of the Supreme Court. Bail was allowed. The erection of the wireless station at -Chatham Island is to be proceeded with at once. The TTimitangi. leaving tonight, will take down to Waitangi the ollice and residence for two operators, and also a p'lrtv of men to earnout the work. The plant will be shipped a little later on. AN ALLEGED ABSCONDER. Auckland. Thursday. In (he Police Court. Frederick John Craddock. lately a member of the firm of the Craddock Hard wave Company. Cbristchurch. was charged with having about January 25 stolen the records of the company, a private ledger, cash book, list of book debts, etc. 'Craddock left Cbristchurch at the end of January and had since been staying at various places in Auckland. Tie was arrested last night as be was about to board the southbound express. Amongst his effects were several records sought by the company. Craddock was also charged with being about to leave New Zealand without the intention of adequately providing for his wife's maintenance. Accused was remanded to Ohvistcl'iirch. Counsel asked for bail. The police opposed the application, stating that accused had really absconded from the south and bad taken the name of Firman when he left Christchurch. He later assumed the name of Flavell. Bail was refused.
