The .frenchman asked to see Don Ramon, who proved to be a tall, militarylooking, distinguished, elderly man. After thanking him, the Frenchman suddenly asked Don Ramon, ''Did you ever know John Orth?" Don Ramon seemed annoyed, and answered with irritation, "Why should T have known John Orth? And, supposing I did know him. what then? He is dead. isn't lie? And you might go about telling everybody that the whilom Archduke John Salvalor of Austria, who renounced all his titles and his name, is still alive. '<t nobody would believe you. Dead in. n don't come to life again." M. Cenae is convinced that Don Ramon is John Orth.
