SCHOOL CADETS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Wednesday. At the, meeting of, the Education Board to-day, Mr. Anderson, Assistant Inspector-General of Schools, wrote: "I have, by direction of the Minister, to intimate that in the opinion of the department the conduct of free place pupils in secondary schools will not be held to he satisfactory if the requirements of the defence regulation;; are not observed, and request accordingly that in future in the periodical reports on holders of free place scholarships the.matter will receive the necessary consideration among the conditions of tenure to he fulfilled." Several members protested that i this rule was unfair to children whose parents had religious convictions on the. subject. The. matter was referred to a committee.
CONFERENCE OF ODDFELLOWS. Levin, Wednesday. At the annual Wellington district conference of delegates of Oddfellows' lodires the Kilbirnie and Masterton lodges were fined for failure to make returns within the specified time. It was resolved to hold the next district conference at Pahintua. in February, 1014. A discussion took place regarding the subvention propositi* brought forward by the late Premier, Mr. Seddon (on the-lines of the statute now existing in Xew South Wales), but the conference deferred a decision.
