1 ] SOUTHLAND COAL AREAS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Monday. Messrs. Wilford and Levi, solicitors, acting on behalf of Messrs. Hall, Stout and Lillicrap, solicitors, of Invercargill, to-day served the Prime Minister, as Minister of Lands, with a summons issued by Gavin Brighton, the owner of the much discussed lease-in-perpetuity in Southland, in reference to his coal lease. TRAINING COLLEGES. Wellington, Monday. 1 A conference of the heads of Train- j ing Colleges and members of the Boards ! of Advice opened to-day, Mr. HogbenJ Inspector-General, ' presiding. In wel- ! coming the delegates, the chairman oxpressed the hope that their deliberations would be advantageous to the system of education, so far as it concerned training colleges. One question they wduld be in a better position to settle ■than three years ago was the relation of university college studies to professional studies. Another matter was that ' of the conditions that are required by the new regulations for giving students who had been in training for full-time teachers, certificates based on training i college work. The extension of university bursaries would also be discussed. TERRITORIALS FINED. 1 Wanganui, Monday. ' Five Territorials were fined thismorn- ! ing sums ranging from five to ten shil- ' lings for not attending drill. I RE-UNION AT THAMES. '• Thames, Monday. ( The Thames re-union was a great . success. Over a thousand people came from Auckland alone. A largo, gathj firing of pioneers was hold, visitors be- , ing accorded ail enthusiastic welcome. A civic reception was held, many social • functions being arranged. . The greatest • hospitality was tendered to the visitors, who also practically had the freedom of . the town. There was an impressive scene at the departure of the steamer for Auckland. The visit will be return- ' ed at exhibition time.
TELEPHONE BUREAU FLOODED. Napier, Monday. The whole telephone service in the Napier district was thrown out of action this morning through the bursting of a hydrant, which resulted in the flooding of the exchange and the short circuiting of the wires. The trouble is not likely to Tie remedied till late this afternoon, and the business people are in the meanwhile suffering considerable inconvenience. A COMPENSATION CLAIM. Duncdin, Monday. Marion Fox claimed £ISOO from the Otago Harbor Board as compensation for the death of her husband, owing to a culvert accidentally slipping and crushing him. The case was settled for £BOO compensation and costs. A SLY-GROGGER. Rotorua, Monday. At a sequel to the tragedv in the lake oil the 7th. when Solomon "Newton was drowned, Richard Hcalv pleaded guilty to three charges of supplying liquor to Maoris off licensed premises. Tlealey, who hired the launch, supplied liquor for the party, the Maoris partaking Fines and costs aggregating Bil Is were imposed.
GIRL'S DARTNG ESCAPADE. Christehnreh, Monday, A girl 16 years of age, who was being detained on a charge of a bicycle-theft, made a daring attempt to escape from the lock-up yesterday afternoon. She squeezed through a small opening i„ | lPr cell wall, and was removing ihV ol aw from (lie lavatory window when she was caught. Tn a couple of minutes she would probably have been at liberty. FTRE URTGADESMEN CONFER. Wanganui. Mondav. The general conference of the United Fire Brigades' delegates opened this morning. 125 delegates being present. The Mayor welcomed the delegates, after which a general discussion of matters relating to fire brigades ensued.
