GROUND FOR NEW PLYMOUTH. There was quite an enthusiastic gath ering of cricketers (some twenty-Ave be ing present) at a meeting in the TowHall last night, presided over by Mr Geo. Grey, to further consider the ques tion of obtaining a permanent home fo cricket in New Plymouth. Mr. Grey reported that the sub-corn mittee appointed had gone carefully into the matter of grounds, and were unani-| mously in favor of abandoning the Rcc | reation Grounds, and of the Association obtaining about 7 acres at the Racecourse Reserve. This they understood could be obtained from the Borough' Council rent free, and for the exclusive use of cricket by the New Plymouth Recreation and Racecourse Reserves Act 1887. The Association could then have three pitches laid down for matches besides practice wickets. I The President stated that as time was getting on, he had at once put in an application to the Borough Council fo the area recommended by the sub-corn ! mittee. and the Borough Council had ap ] pointed a committee to go into the matter. but so far no recommendation had been made. On the racecourse, there were so manv conflicting interests to consider, viz.. Football, Agricultural Soc ietv and Coursing Club, that it might be difficult to get the exclusive control o .sufficient area, though the whole intent of tlie Act seemed to consider crieke before any other sport. The Presiden stated (hat years ago, in the days of the A.C. Club, cricket was very strong in New Plymouth, ar.d it was only by consent of the cricketers that the Jockey Club were enabled to get an Act through allowing them to use the outer edge rE (lie reserve, and that Act safe-guarded (he interests of cricketers. The two

acres mentioned in the application to the Borough was a clerical error, which' had since been rectified. Mr Tin in remarked that lie had visited (In■ racecourse in company with the Boromrh F.nirineer. Tliev could secure an area of 200 yards by 130 yds suitable for two match wickets and a represents | tive wicket, but to do so it would be necessary to make arrangements with, the Star Club and the Coursing flub. j On the motion of Mr. Maekay, n, hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the chairman for the lead he had taker?, a lead which had been wanted for :i long time. | Mv. Whittle referred to the haphazard way in which the various areas had been taken up on the reserve. It would, he considered, be best for the Council to re-adjust all the areas, and allocate them "sain. recognising of course the claims of those already on the ground. If the whole was properly planned there would be room for all. TTe moved that a small committee should Tie appointed to wait on Hie Borough Council and endeavour to obtain a re-adjnstmeut on the lines surest erl. This was ajrreed to. and a ! <-ommitiee consisting of Messrs. Whittle, 1 T.ash, fin in and the President was ap-. pointed to wait on the Council. j The President did not think there would lie any insuperable difficulty to surnionnl if all pulled together. Messrs. Tlewlev. Bain, and the secve farics of the Xew Plymouth. United Service end T/nv Clubs were annointed a committee of ways and means to report at a further mcclinsr. A vote of thanks to the chair lennin a led the meeting.
