Several social functions arc .looming in tlic near future. The young people ItavO arranged a dance for the 21st inst. in ajd of the lmll funds. ;ind another is to lie held ou the 27th in aid of the Horticultural Society. The annual show is to be held on Mnri'li 13. and ihe secretary (Mr. IT. Ruirtball) and the committee are now hard at work, and nn'paiiis will be spai'cd to make the show as successful as it has been in previous years. Of the polar disaster much has been and will be writ-ten. Five of England's brave men have been called away, and, unknown to us. have for nearly a year been resting in the silent, distant itomb. Memorials to these brave men will probably be raised in all parts of the British Empire. Where in Taranaki would be the most fitting spot to erect a monument in memory of these heroic explorers? The thought occurs that the very summit of Egmont's snow-clad slopes would not be an inappropriate site for such.
