A GRUESOME FIND. By Telegraph— Press Association. Ashburton, Last Night. A human leg, with a sock on the foot, lias been found near the mouth of the Rakaia river -by Mr. A. 11. Shury. a well-known angler. It is supposed to be part of the remaiiis of Nicholas, or Darby, who were washed out to spa from the mouth of the liangitata river (35 miles south) several weeks ago.

FIRE BRIGADES CONFERENCE. • Waagaaui; Last Night. • Over seven hundred firemen from all ' parts of New Zealand in town for the demonstration and conference, which takes place this week. To-day' there was a monster church parade, attended by (570 firemen, as Avell as by the Territorial officers and two bands! At the various churches, references were made to the Antarctic heroes, and the ' bands played the "Dead March." After the services an official welcome was tendered to the visiting firemen at the Opera House by the Mayor of the town and the member for the district. This afternoon the visitors were taken to Castlecliff. The conference begins to-morrow morning. and the competitions take place on Wednesday and Thursday, when it is expected that there will be a great influx of visitors.
