ESTREATED BAIL.
AX INTERESTING DIALOGUE.
Per Press Association.
Invercargill, Last Night,
Donald MeQuarrie, who is wanted on a charge of theft of a quantity of whisky from the Invercargill jetty, and had been admitted to bail, has not yet been appreherided. McQuarrie's father entered into a bond of £SO for his son's appearance. On the day of the hearing the accused failed to appear and MeQuarrie, senr., was called upon to show cause why his recognizance should not be estreated. The Magistrate, before ordering the forfeiture of the security, adjourned the hearing, for a week, suggesting that the defendant, on becoming acquainted through the newspapers with his father's position, would turn up. The final hearing was set down for today, when His Worship remarked: As a business man you cannot see why this should be carried out?
McQuarie, senr.: Certainly, I am to blame. It did not occur to me that the boy would not., turn up. His Worship:' You never thought your son would ,let his father in for £SO. MeQuarrie: Well, he knew very well that i could not afford to lose £SO. His Worship: We often have a great deal bigger bonds than that. I shall make an order.
McQuarrie: Tn the event of his turning up. what is my position then ? His Worship: T do not think I have any more to do with it. We have to get it from you, whether he turns up or not. That is a matter for the Government. McQuarrie: When is it to be paid? His Worship: It will have to be paid pretty soon. McQuarrie: It will be paid this afternoon.
