"While doing her preliminary ynllnp in the Farewell Handicap at the Taranaki Jockey Club's meeting yesterday. Or. j Paget's mare lucerne put her foot in a hole and wrenched her slide so badly thai she had to be withdrawn from the race. In the meantime a sum of .£loo had been invested on the mare, and the investors not unnaturally clamored for a return of their money. Unfortunately the stewards had no power to make such a refund, as the rules of racing distinctly state that once a horse is in the hands of the starter no money may be re- > funded from the fotalisalor. A horse is in the hands of the starter after the jockey has weighed out. Lucerne will probably be incapacitated for some time. ' The stewards of the Taranaki Jockey Club were so dissatisfied with the running in the Hurdle Race yesterday that a mee/inpf was called to consider the running generally. Tt was continued between the races for some time, and was iiltimntrdy adjourned until February 25, in (he secretary's office. The dividend was paid out an the first horse, Rercola, but the money invested on the second'iand third horses. Aviatrix and Timofbv. was impounded, pending- (he result , of further enquiry.
