AUCKLAND WHARF FATALITY.

WATETSIDERS TAKING 24 HOURS OFF. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. A fatal accident occurred on board the steamer Matatna at the railway wharf this afternoon, when a waterside woiker named Ernest Alfred Bowles received such fearful injuries that he ex- ' pired almost immediately. Deceased was working cargo in the'hold when a case became detached from a sling and, fell 35 feet, striking the unfortunate maa a terrific blow on the left temple. Deceased, who was thirty-five years of age; , leaves a wife and three children. The present makes a total of thirty accidents which have occurred to waterskiers on the Auckland wharves since December 30, two-of which have proved fatal. The watersiders decided at the last general meeting that in future all work should cease on the wharves for 24 hours _in ease of a member of the Union being killed or dying from injuries received while working on the wharves. All shipping companies were notified to this effect. The secretary of the Union notified a reporter that, as far as he could at present state, the - decision arrived at by his union would' be carried into effect in the present case.
