BOROUGH COUNCIL.

' VARIOUS ACTIVITIES. Various activities are covered in the monthly reports which will come before to-night's meeting of the Borough Council. WORKS COMMITTEE. • The Works Committee recommends that the Baptist Church Trustees be informed that the Council cannot see its iway at present to make a footpath in Liardet street adjoining the new church, hut that this work is provided for in the street and water loans; that Mr. S. Lush ibe informed that the Council cannot see, its way to accede to his request for the extension of sewers in Devon street West; that the Borough Engineer be authorised to overspend the asphalting and tarring vote by £75; that the terms of the easement granted by the trustees of the estate of the late J. W. Morshead be approved and the Borough Engineer be instructed to give effect to the same; that the plans l of the house numbering of Courtenay street and Powderham street be approved; that Messrs. Weston and Weston's letter re easement from Mrs. Hoskin's estate he Referred to Mr. J. Skinner to report; jtliat the Borough Engineer report upon ■the question of providing storage for forage at the stables; that the Borough Engineer be authorised to give effect to Mr. Climie's recommendation' to replace about 3 chains length of scour pipe from the filters with a larger pipe, the work to be effected after March 31. | RESERVES COMMITTEE.

This committee recommends: That ,tlie seal of the Council be affixed to the lease to Mr. M. Jones of section 2330, and his Worship the Mayor and Councillor Mannix be appointed to sign same on behalf of the Council; that the. Foreshore Improvement Executive Commiti tee, consisting of Messrs. J. F. Eustace, W. S. Gilbert, G. J. Russell, J. Sturmey, y. H. Beal, G. Mclsaac, H. Tiplady, G. E. Blanchard, and the chairman of the Reserves Committee, be authorised to administer the Kawaraa Park (exclusive of the baths), and also that small triangular piece of land at the corner of Dawson street owned by the Council; the committee to be subject to the Reserves Committee but to have power to keep the reserve In question clean and to effect such improvements as they think desirable, but to have no power to commit the Council to any expenditure. ELECTRIC LIGHT COMMITTEE. The Electric Light Committee in its report recommends: That Mr. Downea be informed that his application for electric light will be considered if sufficent residents between Govett Avenue and his house undertake to instal the light, and that he be requested to supply a list of those willing to take the light in the locality mentioned; that, in accordance with the recommendation of the electrical engineer, the tender of Messrs. Turnbull and Jones of £1529 6s •for the supply of turbine alternator governor and relief valve as per specifications be accepted. LIBRARY COMMITTEE.

This committee recommends: Thafi the offer of Mrs. Courtney, of Stratford to donate Maori curios to the Museum be accepted, and that a letter of thanks be forwarded to her; that the chairman Mr. R. Whetter, and Rev. J. W. Burton be authorised to purchase additional Works of fiction during the month. BOROUGH ENGINEER'S REPORT.

The borough engineer (Mr. C. Skitrop) reports as follows: —

Streets:—Devon street: The metalling ot this street is progressing satisfactorily. The new motor is working well, and with four weeks' fine weather the work should be completed. Approximately 40 cubic yards of patching has been done on the various streets. Six miles of streets have been cleaned with the road grader at a cost of £4 per mile. To have done this work by hand would have cost £l2 per mile.

Loan Work. Morley street: This street has been metalled with the old metal removed, which is very dirty. A coat of new metal will be put on as soon as the old metal lias settled down. Gaine street: The formation is progressing satisfactorily, and should be completed in four weeks, and ready to take the metal by the end of March. Leach street: The formation is progressing satisfactorily. Belt road; The formation is now completed, and will be ready for metalling in about two weeks.

Sewers.—Devon street: This sewer is now completed to Cutfield road. Morley street: The sewer is now completed from Devon street to Vivian street, and from Devon street to Young street. Young street: This sewer is just about completed.. There were six sewer connections made this month.

Korbing and Channelling: The kerbing and channelling on the northern side of Moturoa road, between Newton street and the South road, is now completed. Waterworks. The -four-inch water main is now laid from Gilbert street to the racecourse grandstand. Approximately 10 chains of 8-inch main have been laid on to the South road. The waterworks' caretaker reports everything satisfactory at the filters. The reservoir is just able to maintain its normal level by keeping the filters going constantly. Nine water connections have been made this month. ELECTRICAL ENGINEER'S REPORT.

Mr. Black (electrical engineer) re-

ports:— Private lighting extensions, Westown; Poles have been erected along Tukapa street to just beyond Omata road, also in Belt, road and David street. High ' tension lines have been run from Vivian street along Morley street, Wallace Place and Tukapa street to David street, and secondary lines in Tukapa street and Belt road. Two houses have been connected on this line.

Franklev road: Poles have been erected on Frankley road a few chains beyond Govett avenue and alon? Govett avenue. When the poles now laid are erected, a bigli tension line will be run from Vivian street along Dawson street, Frankley road and Govett avenue, and as soon as any houses are ready for connecting secondary lines can be 'run as required.
