■ The Egmont Racing dub's summer meeting was concluded yesterday in splendid weather. The racing was better than on the first day, and finishes close and exciting. The attendance was not up to that of the previous day, but speculation was brisk, and the sum of £17,013 went through the machines, making a total of dt.lOl for the two days, an increase of £9027 on last year's figures. r „. ji„, ..■.■■riii"' event, the Wnimr.te. Handicap. Dearest was a slightly hetter fnvorile tie,,, Peroneal. Heatherb.ae and flrallan also heinir '.veil Lacked. 1 ero-r.r-al drew No. 1 on the vails, and
r showed out first from a good start. I When the field settled down, Peroneal i was in the van, followed by Goldsize and a bunched crowd, with Ineurii whipping
in. The order was unchanged as they | passed the railway entrance, but Lu- | ccrne had run up to third place as they ' came across the top stretch. Peroneal i and Goldsize, were first into the straight, , Lucerne coming fast on the outside, and Tleatherlirac fighting hard for an opening on the rails. Olliver was not to be caught that way, and Heatherbrae had to come round. At the distance Goldsize had Peroneal beaten, and Lucerne also fell away. Heatherbrae came with a fine run on the outside, and, catching Goldsize twenty yards from home, won by a neck. Dearest, who came from a long way back, was half a length away, third, Lady Volga, fourth and Peroneal fifth. Lady Volga carried a lot more money than on the first day, and ran 'a surprisingly better race.
All started in the Farmers' Plate. The Waverley-trained Tirohanga carried a few pounds more than the first day's winner, Ttoyal Patron, and Princess Flo was nexs in demand. Mr. O'Connor effected a splendid send-off. and the field raced in a line for a hundred yards. Then Princess Flo dashed to the front and led past the stand. Sylvan Glade and Tirohangi heading the rnek. and Moirette and Nebulous lying hist. At the six furlongs post Princess Flo had in-erra-ed lur lead to* three lengths, and along (In; back the positions were unchanged. Three furlongs from home Tirohangi and St. Kildaro were the mare's neares' companions, ami at the turn Moirette and Karimoi were coming fast under pressure. St. Kildaro and Moirctte were the first to '-crack," and Karimoi anA Tirohangi were left to chase the winner home. Princess Flo won easily by three lengths, and Karimoi was half a' length in front of Tirohanga. Then came the stragglers—Sylvan Glade, Moirettc and Gurnet, Nebulous, very lame in. front, walked in with the crowd. The public made no mistake about the Eltham Hurdles. Ngatiruamii being sent out a strong order. The quartette were quickly slipped, Aviatrix taking up the running, followed by Marton, Ngatiruanui and Sandy Paul. Passing the stand. Aviatrix was' five lengths in front of Marton. the others lying handy. A poor jump lost a length for Aviatrix, and at the six-fnrlong post Xgatiruanni bad got within a couple of lengths of the Wanganui mare, In the next furlong Ngatiruanui joined the leader, and three furlongs from home was well clear. Sandy Paul and Marton passed Aviatrix before reaching the turn, and under the flail Sandy Paul drew almost level with Ngatiruanui at the last fence. Once on the fiat the favorite shook off his chestnut rival, and sailed home a winner of a fast-run race by two lengths. Marton was six lengths away third, and Aviatrix a similar distance away last.
The seven horses "carded" lined i\] for the Okaiawa Hurdles, Serenity he ing a. better favorite than Allure, am .Whimper, Proxy and Clemeney. Tim othv was first away, followed by Proxy As they raced into the straight the ordci was unchanged, Allure being third, Ser .enitv fourth, and Clemency last. Vassing 'the stand Timothy was still three lengths out from Proxy, Serenity having run up to third. Proxy was beaten hall a mile from home, and Serenity joined Timothv. Bercola and Allure improving their positions. As they swung into the straight Allure took the lead, and was never afterwards troubled, winning very easily by half a length from his stablemate, Bercola. Timothy was a couple of lengths away third, Whimper fourth, and Serenity next. Bercola's display was a pronounced improvement on Wednesday's running, and many of his most-ardent admirers, no doubt, had their hearts in their mouths when they saw the chestnut threaten to beat the bay, which, of ■•curse, evervbodv had backed. The stewards put Kelly, the rider of Bercola, nit for twelve months -for not riding lis horse out when he had a reasonable hance of winning.*' Clemeney lost her ider just before reaching the straight. Dearest was the only withdrawal from he Atkinson .Memorial Stakes. Mir a vas confidently backed down to favorte, and only landed the money. Sea lueen Masterpiece and Con the Sbaugh'aun were the only others to carry much iioncv Sea Oucen caused a little ■rouble nt the barrier, and Cheddar ,roke thvoiijrh once, but finally the lowd were dispatched on level terms, •hortlv after the start Kina lost his ■ider. Four furlongs rom home Kauroa dropped back beaten, ,iwl Mira closed up a'little on Patriotic. ifnsW Laddo was then third, and the est W-iu-fl.
