In Australia better pay is offered and shorter hours. Boys entering the service have no guarantee of promotion, and' consequently prefer commercial work. Wellington, Thursday. The local papers have lately been publishing statements about the alleged ■ grievances of operators in the Welling- \ ton telegraph office. Among the griev- j ances alleged were insufficient pay and , too many examinations. These' were ' said to be responsible for numerous resignations, the men preferring to take '■ work in Australia and under wireless „ installations. A deputation, represent- / ing all grades of operators, waited on Mr. Morris, secretary, and stated that ) they knew nothing of these grievances. { Regret was expressed at the publicity ' given to statements which were both in- , correct and misleading. The deputation ) brought under the secretary's notice \ some matters which in their opinion re- i quired adjustment, and it is considered probable some of the requests will be granted, but it was made clear that' .; members of the deputation had no sympathy with the statements published by individual officers. i
