MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

BY-LAW CASES. Harriett Ellen Johnson applied in the Magistrate's Court yesterday for the cancellation of a maintenance order against her on the grounds of inability to pay. The Magistrate (Mr. A. Crooke, S.M.) granted the application, and remitted the arrears.

William Forbes made no' appearance in answer (o a charge of having driven a motor car on the footpath in Duller street, pleading guilty through his solicitor. Tlie borough inspector (Mr. T5. Tippins) explained that the defendant had driven along the footpath for about two or three chains, waving his hands for the ladies and children to get out of his way. "Either the footpath must be very wide, or tlie car very narrow." commented his Warship in inflicting a fine of 5s and costs 7s.

Wm. Lints defended in person a charge of having cycled at night without a light. He explained that nobody was more surprised than himself when the inI speetor stopped him and told him that he had no light. As a matter of fact, his lamp was alight when he mounted -lib itU'.rhine. and the lamp, which must have blown out incidentally, was quite fral'm When he was Btoppefi. The defendant concluded ihat had he and " r - Tippins not been friends, he (Lints/ would have viewed his apprehension in the light of persecution, not a prosecution. Wm. Tlyrne gave evidence, to the effect that when Lints rode past his garage on the night in question his bicycle lamp was burning. The inspector disputed the contention that the" lamp was warm when he had apprehended the defendant. Under the circumstances, the Magistrate merely convicted the defendant and imposed no fine. Edward 'Walsh was charged on two informations with having driven hoTsoS loose along the street. The dsJondatit made no appearance and was fined £l and 7> costs on one count, and convict-fed end ordered to pay costs for tliQ wm( \ offence.
