SPORTING.
F.CMuNT SI'MMKI! MKKTIXG. FIRST DAY. Glorious summer weather favored the Kgmont Racing Club on the opening day of the summer meeting. The attendance was probably the great est ever seen at 1 law era, and a fine day's sport was served up for the club's patrons. Bobriko/fs victory was very popular, l and the old champion covered himself with glory, bis win being recorded in very easy style. The Cup and Flying Handicap provided excellent sport, and the finish of the shorter race was a distinct testimonial to the work of the club's handicapper, Mr, Geo. Morse. Mr, McMalion, stipendiary steward, was on the scene, but bad an easy'day of it. His presence no doubt accounted for the very large number of "triers" in the various events. The "gates" showed an increase of £9O on last year's figures. Pleasant music was supplied by the Hawera Brass Band, wider the baton of Mr. T. MeConnell, and the catering of Dustins. Ltd., left nothing to be desired. Secretary .T. A. Turton had everything in smooth working order, and the recent improvements were most noticeable. About £2OOO has been spent since last meeting in a line tea kiosk, up-to-date number board (including an innovation in giving the horses' positions at the barrier), and in adding an extra tier to the commodious stewards' stand. The club's go-ahead policy lias placed it in the front rank of country clubs. The totalisator i-turns for the day were £17.178. as against £11.007 last year. The following arc the details of the racing:—

NOTES ON THE RACING.
(By "Moturoa.")
Proceedings opened with the ITawera Stakes, popularly called the Bobrikoff Stakes, and the presence of tlie crack Hawke's Bay horse evidently frightened the rubbish out of it. Bobrikoff's only opponents were Masterpiece, Mendip and Lady MensehikofT, and needless to add the first-named was sent out a very hot favorite. Mr. O'Connor sent the quartette away on level terms, Lady MensehikofT on the rails showing out for a few strides. Masterpiece took the lead as they dashed out of the straight, followed by Lady MensehikofT, Bobrikoff and Mendip. The pace was slow along the back, and Bobrikoff could not be held back, running into second place at the five furlongs post and into the lead three furlongs from home. Masterpiece here started to shirk work, and Emmerson had to ride him hard to keep his position. Bobrikoff landed into the straight well in front of Masterpiece, and easily holding his own in the run home won by a couple of lengths from Masterpiece. Mendip was a fair third, and Lady MensehikofT last. The winner was accorded a hearty reception on returning to the scale. He won without an effort, and is certainly the best horse that has ever contested the Hawera Stakes. . All started in the Whareroa Hurdles, I Aviatrix being a better favorite than Sandy Paul. The latter broke the line, | but following her usual tactics Aviatrix ' was rushed to the front and quickly | opened up a whole panorama view be- | tween herself and the next best —Sandy Paul. Passing the stand, Aviatrix was J five lengths in front of Sandy Paul, Marton lying third and Bercola tailing right off. Sandy Paul lessened the gap between the six and five furlong posts, and shortly afterwards took the lead. Aviatrix came again before reaching the turn, and was alongside the leader as they swept into the straight. Both horses were being ridden at the last jump, and both fenced faultlessly. Julian's strong riding quickly settled the question on the flat, and he landed his mount an easy winner after a fine race, j Marton was ten lengths away, third, i Whimper a poor fourth, and Bercola. '•'down the straight." The favorite jumped very big, and this probably cost him the race. Bercola and Sir Tulloch were the only withdrawals from the field for the Ohawt? Hack Hurdles. Ngitiruanui was a strong favorite, Serenity and Allure being next iri demand. After Ngatiruanui had delayed the &tiirfc for some time the son of Maniapoto was first away from a good start. Princess Flo led into the straight from the fat'orite, but jumped badly and lost her position. Ngatiruanui was going well in front as they passed the stand, Allure being second and Serenity next. Allure was fencing poorly, and Serenity went up to second place. Ngatiruanui was never afterwards troubled, and won easily by a couple of lengths from Allure, who finished fast under punishment, and just beat Serenity for second money.
1 Twenty horses wove clistsins the elusive coin in the Move More Hack Handicap. Orattan was a, strong favorite, and the ] next best backed were Tvee Lucerne, Jackpin and Sylvia May. Jaekpin was nnickest to find bis foot, am! cracked on j the pace, followed by Handsome and i Sylvia Mnv. The field nnieklv spread- | eagled, and •Taelc Pin and Handsome were J still holding their places at the turn, j Once straightened up, Lady Fran and 'Park Tide threw out strong challenges, iand the latter was just stretching out. to lift the stake when Orattan swooped down with a nicclv-timed run. and scored by a. bare half length. Lady Fran was a similar distance away, third, and .TackPin fourth. Chimanade was the last, to finish. Throe furlongs from home Tree Lucerne foil, and Lucerne and T.ndv Gordon also came down. Dr. Paget 'broke his collarbone. McDonald received a bad shaking, and .T. O'Shoa was badly rut about the bead. The latter was afterwards removed to the Tfawora Hospital. Lndy MensehikofT. who started earlier in the day in the TTawera Stakes, was the onlv withdrawal from the Fgmont Cup, fourteen horses going to the post. Labor Dav was best backed, Mira and rndocidod also having n big following, Roval Dragoon was first awav. and hliowed the way to TCiita and Labor Dav as they oame into the straight. Passing the stand Royal Dragoon was just clear of Matlow and Patriotic. Then came Undecided (pulling hard) and Cheddar.
Master Tupilhi was his!. Mitlow head- j ,i Royal Drogtwn si.k furlongs from
'some, ami was next. Three furlongs from home ITmlt-cidod had aspnrni'cL command. ami Con the raun ami Mira came fa.',l. "Undecided was first into the jslraivht, and had 110 difficulty in keeping Con the Shaugliriiun at bay, winning very comfortably by over a length. Mira, who made a big bid to got up on the rails, was a similar distance away, third, and then followed Labor Day, who was wellpocketed for half a mile, Kina and Brown Tront. M-'.nawakaha was last.
A dozen horses lined up for the Ladies' Purse, Moirette being most in demand, and Nebulous. Styrax and Haydn Park next best backed. Moirette set out to win all the way, followed by Haydn Park. The pair were together at the five furlongs post, and led to the turn, where Royal Patron challenged. Moirette failed to go on from the distance, and Royal Patron ran in a winner by over a length. Sylvan fllade was a close third, Karimoi fifth, and Master Malachi sixth. Overtime and Phroso declined their engagements in the Flying Handicap. The Aucklander, Coldsize, was a strong favorite, and Dearest, Peroneal and Sanguinary also came in for solid support. A beautiful start was effected, "id the field ran bunched for a furlong.
• n Peroneal showed out from Lady Volga and Sanguinary. The latter ran into the lead three furlongs from home, and led into the straight from Peroneal. Tn the run home Katua, Dearest and Pirhvai joined in, and a fine finish ensued. Sanguinary was challenged by Katua on the outside and Peroneal and •Dearest on the rails, and just squeezed home by a head from Katua. Peroneal was a nick away, third, and Dearest and Piriwai were almost abreast. It was one of the closest finishes seen on the Hawera course.
