LAW v. NEW PLYMOUTH.
Anything hut good cricket was witnessed on the Recreation Ground , on Saturday, on the occasion of the meeting of Law and New Plymouth, The batting was in the majority of cases wretched, the wicket being bumpy in places, and the bowling ordinary. New Plymouth's fielding was weak in spots, while that of Law was, however, up to the usual standard. Batting first, Law I compiled 110 runs in about an hour and a half. It was a ope-man sort of innings, 70 of the score being contributed by Greatbatch aiul 14 by extras. This meant that the remaining ten players notched the munificent total of 26 runs. Not one of them made double figures. Gieatbatch. who seemed to bear a charmed life, had several chances. Law | did badl,\. but New Plymouth did worse, although their innings had this about it.: it was not left to one man to make practically the whole of the score. Thomson, who opened, was dismissed to | the tune of 14, and never appeared at ease, while his partner (Arden) was got rid of very much cheaper than usual, failing to open a scoring account. Gwilliam batted steadily, and put up top score with 20. and p'Sirt of the time lie was partnered by Harding, who, outlasting several of his side, notched thirteen ,runs. As regards the remaining members of the eleven, it is enough said when it is mentioned tlmt not one of them made more than two runs. Detailed scores: LAW.—First Tunings.
