WELLTXOTON amateur champion
SHIPS. Per Press Association. Wellington. Last Night. The Wellington provincial amateur athletic championship meeting was held yesterday ill splendid weather, before an attendance of 2000 or 3000. The track was good, but the races were uninteresting, except in the long-distance events. About twentv-livc men competed, including a contingent from the Wairarapa. The three-mile flat championship proved the best contest. At the end of the first mile L. Cook (Wairarapa), O. Pugli (Civil Service), and J. F. Byrne (Athletic) wore leading. The positions were, the same at the end of the second mile. Then Byrne led in the next half mile, only to be displaced by Cook, till fifty yards from the tape, when Byrne made a great dash and got home first. Push, the bolder of the championship, had fallen away. The fate of the MeVill ■■ Shield was in doubt right up to the last event, but fell to the Wellington Club (the holders), 47. who led by one point from Wairarapa 4(i. The other club scores were: Civil Service 20, Athletic 15, Victoria College 14, Petone 4, Manawatu 3, Central Harriers 1, Seaton n 0. Results: 75yds. Handicap.- 11. Hart 1, L. Murphy -2, IS.
