A WELSH CENTENARIAN

The death of Mrs. Mary Hughes at the great age of 10(1 years recalls a famous episode in Welsh history. She was one of a family of 11 children, and had a brother who lived to be 103. She was unable to speak or understand a word of English, and was born near Fishguard eight years after the French incursion, in repelling which her mother took an active part. History relates how a FrPTich force, 1400 strong, "the scum of every gaol in France," effected a landing near Fishguard on February 22, 1707- Frightened by the red coats and tall hats of the Welsh women, who Igatficred on the hills, they surerndered inI gloriously two days afterwards to the local militia, headed by the Lord Cawdor lof the time. Mrs. Hughes died at Nine Wells, in Pembrokeshire.
