SWIMMING.

THE AMATEUR STATUS. Per Press Association. Chrfetehureh, Lasfe \Night. n At a meeting, of the Council of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming As-, sociation to-night, a letter was received from Mr. F. Atkins, chairman of the Wellington Centre, requesting the Council to alter the amateur definition so as to exclude Northern Union players. The writer threatened that the Wellington Union would secede if the request was not granted. It was decided to reply that the present definition had been unanimously adopted by delegate's from all the Associations in conformity with the definition of the International Swimming Association. The Council had no intention of altering it. Strong surprise was expressed at the threatening nature of Mr. Atkin's letter.
