A BETTING CASE.
PUBLICANS AT VARIANCE. • By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. At the Magistrate's Court to-day. Patrick Orillin, a hotelkeeper at Wellington, sued Charles James King, hotelkeeper of Napier,' to recover £IOO and £2 9s interest. It was claimed that Griffin, in response to a. telegram from King, invested for King .e.ll) on each of two horses running on October 28 at Treiv tham races. Both horss lost, and Griffin had not been repaid his nione} r . King, in evidence, admitted that he was morally responsible, but said that he was sure that the investment of the money was on behalf of another man, and as soon as the latter paid him he (King) would pay Griffin. Replying to counsel, King said that he would plead the Gaming Act as his defence. Finally Griffin agreed to accept a non-suit in order to take a Supreme Court action to determine if he could legally recover the money.
