BOWLING ASSOCIATION.
ANNUAL MEETING.* THE OPEN DOOU POLICY. There was a very large attendance of bowlers at the annual meeting of the Taranaki Bowling Association, which. was held at New Plymouth list night. The president (Mr. ft old water was in the chair. | The .balance-sheet showed) receipts amounting to £23, and an expenditure of £24 12.4 1 Id. The deficiency was made up by the Patea Club. j OFFICERS ELECTED', The incoming president of Ithe New Plymouth Club was elected (president, and the incoming vice-presideits of the Fitzroy and West End Club-, elkcted vicepresidents for the ensuing year. Mr. C. T. Mills was unanimously re-ejected honary secretary and treasurer! It was also decided that the secretary of the New Plymouth Club be honorary audi-
tor for the ensuing year. j THE EXECUTIVE.) During the election of officers the question arose as to whether the executive should consist of New Plymouth bowlers alone, or New Plymouth bowlers with a representative of delegates from the country duos. Durinsr the discussion the unanimitvsof opinion appeared to be that the olijbs outs'de New Plymouth should have Jrepreßentntion, but that any routine fnisiness of an unimportant nature might be left to the New Plymouth-represenjatives to transact. ~ Eventually it transpired tha.t each club hnd to appoint its own delegate and *">. tify the secretary accordingly t whereupon the discussion terminated. J OPEN TOURNAMENTS? Mr. W. N. Ewing touched-unon th<* >dvi?abilitv or otherwise djf throwing ; the tournament open to clubs outside Taranaki. He said that durfng the present tournament, the secretary had received several applications for permission tn take part in the .tournament' from "Inns in other parts of; the Dominion. Tn o'-der to test the feeling of th» meeting, ho moved: "Thaj; in futufft tournaments "hall be open tournaments.", He thought Taranaki would "be able to hold up its end as well as Aacklftnd and Wellington players. Greens could easily be provided by playing some of the sections, if necessary, at Inglewood and Waitara.
Mr. S. Paul seconded the motion. Mr. Purrev, of Ingle,\*lood. 'thought the matter should be referred.J>ft>gac'> club in order to get their so have their swdance and a majority vote. Personally, he rather preferred the open door policy. Mr. A. K. Smart pointed out that in anv case the question would first be referred to each affiliated club in the province. It would not affect the competition nmonc Taranaki Clubs, as the shield ;
would' still go to the highest scorer amonsr the clubs affiliated to the Association. Tarauaki was the only district in the Dominion thfct had not adopted the open policy. The President was against the suggestion. Let them keep to themselves. Plav bowls as a game of pleasure. Lose sight of trophies, and T>lav for the hare honor and glory. Theiry membersnin would increase next year right throughout the province, and the 'whole of the three greens in New Plymouth would ' require to he used. Let mote colts rinks come forward and swell the number of competitors. The danger in throwing the tournament open was that it would suit the purpose of many outside bowlers who visited all the various tournaments as a mere matter of business. Mr. King also thought that the tournament should he confined to the province . Mr. Fookcß (Stratford) .thought that no doubt they at present got a great many, more entries throughout the province than they would if the tournament was thrown .open to the'"pot-hnnters" of other centres, who would 'lose" many of their local men in a match.
Mr. W. J. Penn moved that the question be referred to the various clubs for their respected opinions. There were, he said, points both for and against the , proposal. Mr. Surrey aeoomled the amendment. Mr. Ewing withdrew his motion, ami Mr. Penn's motion was- then earired. NEXT YEAR'S TOURNAMENT.
Touching on next yeart tournament, the president said that New Plymouth was really the only plade at which it could be held. It had thjLa&'antage of possessing three good grw?T and next year, with the anticipate <>!lieavier entries, all these would dftptlesa be, required. He moved, that inf future tournaments be held at New Plymouth. Mr. Eoolces (Stratford) seconded the motion .
Mr, Christenson moved an. amendment, that next year's tournament be held here and that the meeting should not bind itself on all future tournaments. Tncidently, the speaker mentioned that Patea was in hopes of having sufficient greens available before very long. The amendment was seconded by Mr. Black. i v
The president withdrew his motion, in favour of the amendment, which was then adopted. SERVICES APPRECIATED.
