THE ANNUAL MEETING. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute was held to-day, Mr. V. Chceseman presiding. The Hon. 11. UBell was amongst those present. The president referred to the need for strengthening the institute's financial position. The year's accounts show receipts, including a balance of brought forward, of .1:1220, leaving a credit balance of £lsl, but against this is a sum of £292 due to the Government Printer on account of printing the "Transactions." It was hoped that the Covornment would assist in the matter of placing the institute on a sound footing; also to house the museum and library of the institute in proper

buildings. The Hon. 11. D. Bell expressed his belief that the 1 matter of a grant would be dealt with in the next session of Parliament. Tie thought that the proposal to establish a Board of Advice was worthy of approval, but would like to see a Judge of the Supreme Court added to the personnel. Dr. Cockayne suggested that the "Transactions'" should he published in .-■■urto size, to facilitate the inclusion of maps of adequate proportions, such as were inserted in the larger publications of the Lands Department. A motion by Mr. G. M. Thomson, M.P., was carried,, recommending the Government to give effect to the clauses of the report presented to Parliament last session by the -Museum and Scientific Publications Committee, dealing with the appointment of a scientific board of advice, and uniformity of publication. Tt was also decided, on Mr. Thomson's motion, <to ask the Government to amend the New Zealand Institute Act so as to increase the annual grant from £SOO to £750. Tt was resolved to bring under the notice of the Government the unsatisfactory condition and inconvenient arrangement of the library. Officers for 1913 were elected as follows:—President, Professor Chilton (Canterbury College); treasurer, Mr. C. A. Ewen; lion, editors. Professor Chilton and Mr. R. Speight, M.A., M.S.C.; publication Professors Farr, Ben- , ham, Chilton and Mr. G. Thomson; lion. , librarian, Mr. A. Hamilton; secretary, , Mr. B. C. Aston; Hector Award Committee for 1314, Dr. Baldwin-Spencer (Mel- , bourne Museum), Mr. Robert Etheridge [ (Sydney Museum) and Mr. T. Cheese- ( | man (Auckland Museum); hon. members, , { Mi\ Dotting Hemsley (botanist, of Kew, ' England), and Professor Davis (Profesi. sor of Geography at Harvard University, t U.S.A.). x It was decided that the next meeting 3 should be held at Wellington on JanuI ary 30, 1014.
