UNITED SERVICE v. NEW PLYMOUTH New Plymouth went under to United Service on Saturday to the tune of 116 runs. Batting first, the latter team compiled 199 runs in about two hours. The first five wickets fell for 99 runs, and it looked as if New Plymouth had a chance of wiping off old scores. Bain hit out freely while he stayed, but he was caught in the outfield before he had done [much damage. Osborne was bowled for nought, and Colvile, after being missed early, was dismissed at cover-point, while Sullivan, who made such a creditable stand last week, was thrown out before he could "get going. The rest of the team, however, all contributed something, and although individual scores were not high, each man ran into double figures. The bowling was good at the start, but as the score mounted up the trundlers tired considerably. New Plymouth made a poor showing against the keen opposition bowling, Mason being the only one of the eleven to reach double figures. He made 45, and wave only one chance—a difficult one. "Although he only contributed 10 runs. W. Shepperd effectively stonewalled for some time, outlasting several confreres. Arden had the bad luck to be dismissed by a "bailer" for nine, and after that it was a mere procession. Scores:—
