THE AUSTRALIAN NAVY. THREE KEELS LAID. Received 2G, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, January 20. The dockyard at' Cockatoo Island was yesterday iiandod by the New South Wales Government 'to the Commonwealth, on the understanding that the works will be available for repairing ships belonging to any section of the 'Empire's navy. ' The ceremony of laying three keels of the Australian'navy was also performed. they being the torpedo boat destroyer-. Der'went and Torrens. and the protected cruiser Brisbane.

He was only confined in the deckhouse, where the machinery was situated. For lighting and ventilation it was superior to any of the officer's cabins.
A REPRESENTATIVE COMMITTEE. London, January 24. Mr. Douglas Hall suggested that if overseas Ministers were added, representatives of the Opposition in Parliament should also attend the Defence Committee to enable the decision to represent all parts of the Empire and all parties in the State. The Premier replied that although hitherto it had not been considered advisable, to summon politicians who were not responsible for the conduct of affairs, he .did not think the limitation ■necessarily applied to sub-committees' investigation of particular problems.
