Mr. W. McLean, secretary of the Bonithon Petroleum Company, arrived in town on Saturday night. Mrs. John Vile, of Pahiatua, has attained the great age of ninety-six years. Mrs. Vile is comparatively hale and hearty.
The death occurred at the New Plymouth Hospital on Saturday after a long illness of Mr. Henry Harrison, a former resident of Omata. The death is announced at Wan«ainii aeaothe that there and and nadaaanan of Mr. Duncan Blair, at the advanced age of 81 years. He leaves a widow and a grown-up family. On Saturday last Mr. G. S Baker of Thackery street, Hamilton, celebrated his 9/th birthday. The old gentleman, who Js hale and hearty, shows every indication of seeing a century. He arrived in \the Dominion 51 years ago. At the ripe old age of 86,' Mrs. Horrell a-elict of the late John Horrell, died on Thursday last at Morringsville, near Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. Horrell arrived at Lyttenton in the first of the historic pilgrim ships, the Charlotte Jane which left Plymouth with the pioneers of the Church of England settlement for Canterbury, on September 7th, 1850, at midnight, and reached the anchorage at Lyttelton on December 15th. Mr. Hugh Ross one of the best-known of the officers of the Wellington city. Post Office Savings Bank, died on Friday afternoon as the result of a serious operation he had undergone. Always an enthusiastic volunteer, Mr. Ross was one of the first.to volunteer for service in South Africa, and he was a member of the first contingent. Mr. N. R. McKenzie, headmaster of the Mount Eden school, Auckland, has been appointed Inspector of Schools at Auckland, to succeed Mr. J. Gricrson, who has retired on superannuation. Mr. McKenzie is 45 years of age. He has had 22 years' experience as a teacher, and in November and December of last year was acting-inspector under the
board. Lord Graves, who succeeded in obtaining damages in his recent libel action against his relative, Lord Galloway, is a descendant of Thomas Graves, of Thankes, Cornwall. This gentleman was raised to the Peerage for his distinguished services in the great naval battle of June Ist, 1794, when Admiral Earl Howe gained a decisive victory over the French fleet. The Earl of' Galloway claims to be the oldest legitimate representative of_ the .Royal House of Stuart. He is now in his seventy-seventh year, and served with the Black Watch in both the Crimea and the Indian Mutiny.
