"I am a farmer of the Ministry, and in future I want to ho known as the •Minister for Settlement," remarked the Premier in replying to a toast at "Runvrai. Mr. Massey mentioned, as he has several times done during his prscnt tour north of Auckland, that he intended to provide every applicant with land for settlement, as fast as he could, -believing that the future prosperity of New Zealand hinged upon placing its unproductive lands under settlement. "Who would have thought a few years ago." said Mr. Massey, "that the district of Taranaki, then regarded as the dairv farm, would have been outdone by Auckland? And yet such is the case." The Premier said that the output from Auckland was already greater, and, with its superior climate, it must have a wonderful future as a dairying district. It is questionable whether Auckland's dairy produce export is greater than Taranaki's. Its exports of butter are bigger, but with butter and cheese combined Taranaki leaves the Auckland province well in the rear.
