BUSH BURNS AT GISBORNE. By Telegraph—Press Association, „ Gisborne, Wednesday. uoocl burns have been secured by settlers in the back-blocks who have had bush felled. In some parts of the district, logs left from previous burns hav» been fired, and the-fires 'have 'taken charge of a considerable area of the country. The fences in many cases have been destroyed, but the damage j s not considerable, and ultimately good will result by clearing the country of the logs. Several settlers had anxious flights whilst the lires were in progress. The atmosphere around Gisborne° has been .clouded with smoke for several days. ANNIVERSARY DAY. Wellington, Wednesday. The Anniversary Day celebrations took place in fine weather though it was cloudy at times. Rain fell heavily during the night. The Old Settlers' Sports were largely attended also the races at Trentham. the South Mel-bourne-Wellington cricket match, sports at Worser Bay and Seatoun and the regatta at Petone. The Maori took 400 excursionists to Picton. ITUDDART PARKER STEAMERS. Dunedin, Wednesday. Huddart Parker's have placed an order in England for one. possibly two, steamers of the Zeakndia type." It is not expected they will be available until next year on account of the pressure of work in Home shipbuilding yards.
A I)ATUNf; THEFT. Wellington. Wednesday. During the night a daring i-obl)ory was committed in Lambton Quay, The plate glass window of a shop occupied by Samuel Ross, jeweller, was broken find a quantity of jewellery stolen. The value of the loss is not ascertainable.
