THE LEPER MASSACRE.
A. MODERN NERO. Ey Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 22, 10.5 p.m. Shanghai, January 22. The Governor of Nankin was responsible for the massacre of the lepers. He drove men, women and children into a pit, where a number were shot and the rest burnt alive. The same governor three and a half years ago collected a hundred lepers at Fungchow on a pretext of distributing food, and slaughtered them.
A cablegram from Shanghai, dated January 11, says: —The authorities at Nangking pretended to accept a Catholic Father's offer to build a lazar house foi destitute lepers, who had been living foi some years a good few miles outside the town. They dug a pit ou the parade ground, partly filling it with wood soaked with kerosene. They then drove the lepers into the pit at the bayonet's point. Thirty-nine lepers were shot and incinerated in the presence of large crowds. A fortieth was afterwards shot.
