Mr .C. R. Candy, of Cliristchurch, is on a visit to New Plymouth. A Melbourne cablegram announces the death of Mr. Arthur Windsor, formerly editor of the Age and the Argus. Mr. L. Johnson (private secretary to the Hon. W. H. Hemes), who was injured in an accident at Katikati on January 7, is now restored to health. After 'spending ten days in hospital, he rejoin-, ed his Minister at Auckland on January 17. Mr. John Leitch MacKinlay died in Wellington on Friday night at the age of eighty. He had been in New Zealand for over fifty years, the last fourteen of which were spent in Wellington. A widow and a family of five sons and two daughters were left. Dr. W. J. Dakin, of the University College, London, has been appointed professor of biology in the University of West Australia, in place of Dr. Willey, of Montreal, who declined the appointment by cable. The professorship of history and economics was conferred upon Mr. K. O. G. Mann, 8.A., of the Melbourne University, who is now lecturer at Brisbane University. Mr. W. H. Uttley, Government Overseer for Workers' Dwellings, died at Dunedin last week, from heart failure. The deceased was. for several years, secretary of the Dunedin Trades and Labor Council. He is survived by his wife, one daughter (Mrs. J. F. Strang, of Invercargill), and two sons (Mr. G. H. Uttley, M.A., M.Sc. and Mr. W. M. Uttley, 8.A., both of the Waitaki High School). ton states: —Mr. George A. Smith, aged sixty-nine years, died suddenly on Saturday night. He was playing bowls till late in the evening, when he had tea and went for a stroll. At 10 o'clock a member of his family found him lying on a cou*h. dead. The deceased arrived in Picton from Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1862. and built up a very large business as a builder and contractor. He leaves a large family, of eight sons and six daughters.

The- death of the Hon. J. Bvycc now leaves the Hon. E. Mitehclson, of Aucklnnd. as the last, surviving member of Sir Harry Atkinson's Ministry of 1863.
