RUNNING AMOK.
MAD FOREIGNER'S FREAK. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dargaville, Tuesday. An Austrian or Croatian ran amok last night, and created great excitement. He arrived from the country in the afternoon, and had secured lodging at a boarding-house frequented by his countrymen. He was queer in the evening, and was induced to go to bed. At about one o'clock he rushed into the billiard room in the premises clothed only in a singlet, and seized two cues. He smashed the lamps and fittings, the people in the room fleeing for safety. The madman gained the street and wrecked the acetylene lights under the verandah. He then attacked a store kept by an Austrian, completely demolishing one. plate-glass window and damaging the .other. He proceeded down the street, entered another shop, and struck the proprietor, injuring his eye so that he needed medical attendance. He then wrecked the shop eases and fittings. Here he was secured and taken to the lock-up. At the beginning he was in a frenzy, singing Balkan war songs. He declared that he was guarding the gates of Constantinople. His mental condition had not improved to-day.
