A BETTING CASE.
BOOKMAKER FINED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Monday. In the Magistrate's Court Mr. McArthur gave judgment in the case against James Scott, charged with being in the street for the purpose of betting and with publishing betting cards. The facts were admitted by the defence. The Magistrate said a bookmaker had a right to be in the street, as long as he was not there for betting purposes. There must be evidence to prove that purpose, but in the Magistrate's opinion the evidence given on the first charge not sufficient. The first information was therefore dismissed. On the second charge, the handing of a betting card to a person was sufficient evidence of publication, and defendant was fined £lO. The fine will not be entered or the conviction either, pendin" the decision of the Full Court in the case against Ross, now awaiting a hearing.
