A conference of the Railway Workers' and General Laborers' Association decided on a propaganda campaign for a working week of 44 hours, at a minimum wage of 10s per day for unskilled' labor. THE SMALLPOX CASE. Brisbane, January 20. There have been no further cases aboard the Matarau. The patient is convalescent after the supposed attack of smallpox, and has been landed at Thursday Island. UNION LEADER SHOT. Adelaide, January 20. Thomas Betts, president of the Port Pirie branch of the Masons and Bricklayers' Union, was found shot near the Broken Hill Proprietary works. He states that lie went for a walk prior to retiring at night, when a stranger rushed at him and fired twice. His condition is critical.

He had many times been offered bribes to wreck Royal trains. PLAGUE IN NOUMEA. Sydney, January 20. The plague in Noumea was practically suppressed when the last mail left. Leprosy is increasing startlingly in New Calcutta and the Loyalty Islands, among both whites and natives. The percentage varies from two to three in different districts.
